Highland games are traditionally held all over the country, celebrating various aspects of Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage. They showcase several of the things that have become symbols of Scottish culture around the world – the kilt, bagpipes and famous strength events like the caber toss for example – and are a fantastic exhibition of Scottish and Gaelic culture.
One of the most well-known and popular in the country is The Mull Highland Games in Tobermory, which is held in late July each year. They are the perfect example of what the games should be. Set in an idyllic location overlooking The Sound of Mull, Morvern and Ardnamurchan, there are few places in the country that can compete with the scenery on offer.
The special surroundings are the ideal backdrop to the various events which take place throughout the games. The ever-popular strongman events are featured, with the caber toss, hammer throw and the tug o’ war providing plenty of excitement for the spectators. The event takes place in late July and one can hope it will a sunny day on the isle. And even if it does rain, it will at least make the hill running race slightly more entertaining.
There’s also plenty of focus on the traditional music and dance events, with full pipe bands entertaining the crowds with music and marching and stage shows featuring some of the best dancers in the country. If there was ever a truly Scottish family day out, these games are it. People come from all over the world to attend and get a sense of traditional Scotland that many don’t get to see anymore.
With plenty of stalls featuring local produce there’s great food and drink available, and the whole event is a showcase for all that’s great about Tobermory and Mull. If you’re a foodie, it is definitely the place to try the freshest locally sourced produce.
